Killing whale

By Marisca Pichette
Spring 2022 | Poetry

caught under              the waves

            of the glorious           purple

night

            thump              thump

rippling all      over      and    around

                      into

            herself.

her

            song of orcas

herds soft

scrapes savage—

            skin scaled, eyes wide

                      black & white

playing in the darkened                     abyss

            beat      beat

thump

                         even darkness has

a          heart.

                      Even darkness has

lips.
